From Proto-Tai *xiəwᴬ (“green”). Cognate with Thai เขียว (kǐao), Tai Dam ꪵꪄꪫ, Shan ၶဵဝ် (khǎeo), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜈𑜫 (khiw), Zhuang heu. Compare Old Khmer khiava (“blue; green”), Modern Khmer ខៀវ (khiəw).
