From Pali bhikkhu (“beggar”), referring to a priest that begs for alms; perhaps via Old Khmer bhikkhu (“Buddhist monk”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ភិក្ខុ (phɨkkhoʼ), Burmese ဘိက္ခု (bhikhku.).
