From Middle Chinese 橫 (MC kwɑŋ, ɦˠwæŋ, ɦˠwæŋ^H, “across, horizontal, lateral”). Cognate with Lao ຂວາງ (khuāng), Shan ၶႂၢင် (khwǎang), Ahom 𑜁𑜞𑜂𑜫 (khrang).
