Etymology

Of unclear origin.

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-Aryan *lakṛta-, from Proto-Indo-European *lek- (to bend, leg), and compared with Latin lacertus (the upper arm), Ancient Greek λάξ (láx, with the foot/heel), Old Norse leggr (leg), and Persian لگد (lagad, kick, recoil). Alternatively, Munda origins have also been suggested.

See also लगुड (laguḍa, stick, staff, club), which is a phonetic variant.
