Of uncertain origin. According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ner- (“to twist, turn”), and cognate with English narrow. However, Mayrhofer does not mention this derivation at all, and prefers to derive the root from a t-extension of Proto-Indo-European *h₂nḗr (“power, vital energy; man”).
