Etymology

A term attested very late in the Sanskrit corpus, not mentioned in most dictionaries, of obscure origin.[1] Connections to आटोप (āṭopa, puffing, swelling) are doubtful. Related to Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀝𑁄𑀧𑀺𑀆 (ṭopiā, helmet), whence Hindi टोपी (ṭopī, hat).[2]
