Etymology

From the root ض ي ق (ḍ-y-q), from Proto-Semitic *ṣ́yḳ- (to be narrow). Cognate with Biblical Hebrew צוּק (ṣûq, to constrain, bring into straits, press upon) and Akkadian 𒊓𒀀𒄣 (sâqu).
